DIY Oil Pulling Tablets

If you missed my post about what you need to know about oil pulling, you can find that here. Oil pulling is something I have added to my morning routine and although it took some getting used to, I love it! The tablets I make allow for my routine to go even smoother in the mornings. All I do is pop one in my mouth and swish as I do things like let the dogs out and feed them, wash my face, etc.

Here's what you'll need:
1. Silicone molds or ice cube tray
2. Coconut oil
3. Essential oil of your choice

I used lemon because it is antiseptic, strengthens gums and helps to whiten teeth. Some other good essential oils for oral health are clove, cinnamon, spearmint, peppermint, myrrh, and rosemary.

Here's what you'll do:
1. Heat your coconut oil so it turns to liquid form. I made six molds at a time so I would heat six tablespoons. If you are using an ice cube try with 12 molds, you would heat 12 tablespoons.

2. Drop in essential oil. For six molds I put in 3-4 drops. If you were making 12 molds I would use 6 drops.

3. Pour into molds and place in refrigerator for an hour. Pop out and put into container for storage in the refrigerator {should not be stored at room temperature}.

Front Door Update {DIY Wreath & Bow}

Over the weekend we made some updates to our front door. I started by painting it roasted coffee by Valspar. It was white before and showed every speck of dirt which I h-a-t-e-d. I'll be painting my back door the same color for that very reason {my dogs like to scratch on it to let me know they are ready to come inside and it just looks horrendous at this point}! I also made a new wreath to go with the newly painted front door and both of them together make this update my favorite!! {Other than Fall and Christmas, my front porch is American themed}

This was the sad excuse I had for a wreath before. Yeah, I can't believe I even let that thing hang for everyone to see. Ugh! It was faded from the sun and missing flowers and berries... it was just gross.

So I went to the dollar store and bought two bundles of red flowers and two bundles of white flowers {$4}. Next, I ordered the star burlap ribbonfrom Amazon {$9.99- and I have some leftover to use for something else}.

I kept the grapevine wreathand greenery and threw away the old flowers and berries. I cut my new flowers and left about 2 inches of stem on each one {so that I could poke them into the wreath without having to use glue}. Alternating red and white, I lined the wreath with the flowers. I was trying to mimic the stripes on the American flag.

The next task was to make the bow. I gathered my supplies: something I could use to tie {anything will work, really}, measuring tape, the ribbon, and scissors.

You need to cut your ribbon into two lengths. One needs to be 40 inches long and the other needs to be 14 inches long.

Take your 40 inch long piece and fold into the shape shown below. Since my ribbon was so thick {5.5 inches} I needed to fold it in half first to be able to work with it easier. If you have ribbon 3-4 inches wide, you shouldn't have to do that.

Now take your 14 inch long piece and fold it like so...

You'll now place it on top of your 40 inch long piece...

Lastly you'll take whatever you are using to tie, and you'll tie tightly around the middle. See how it looks like a bow now?

After attaching the bow to my wreath, I played around with it and fluffed it up. Yours should look something like this...

Note: For an added touch, cut the ends of your ribbon into a point!

DIY Laundry Detergent

Last week I made my own laundry detergent for the very first time! It was 100 times easier than I thought it was going to be. For some reason I thought it was going to be complicated because if it wasn't then why wouldn't everyone do it? Well I'm here to tell you it was easy peasy and I honestly do not know why people buy laundry detergent. By making it yourself, you are saving yourself money! I made a powder version but there is also a liquid version using the same ingredients.

http://lifeasabaltimoregirl.blogspot.com/2015/05/diy-laundry-detergent.html

Here's what you'll need:
1. 3 cups Borax
2. 3 cups Baking Soda
3. 3 cups Washing Soda
4. 2 bars of Fels Naptha
5. 20 drops of essential oils {I used breathe & balance}

This recipe makes about a gallon and you only need to use 1 to 2 tablespoons per load, depending on size. So you can get about 128 to 256 loads of laundry out of this batch!

Here's what you'll do:
1. Grate the soap with a cheese grater
2. Add essential oils to soap and mix together
3. In a bucket combine all ingredients: soap mixture, borax, baking soda, and washing soda... then pour into container {I washed empty tea and orange juice bottles and used them as my containers}

 When mixing everything together, do it in layers... this will make it easier for you to get a more even mixture. Voila! You've got yourself some laundry detergent and it was THAT easy. If you'd like a fabric softener, I've heard of people adding 1/4 cup of white vinegar to their load although I've never tried it myself.

Ikea Hacks

Ikea hacks! Lately I've been seeing a lot of these and I have to tell ya... it's making me want to take on another project (I'm sure my husband doesn't like to hear that lol). Have you ever taken an ordinary Ikea product and turned it into something amazing? It seems like it's a pretty common thing but I've never done it. Just look at these cute hacks... looks so simple!

Here are three of my favorite hacks with simple directions to follow. Which one should I take on?

Terrariums!

I'm currently obsessed with terrariums (mini greenhouses). They've seemed to be all the rage for a while now but I'm just jumping on the bandwagon. I've been doing my research and they are pretty easy to make and REALLY easy to maintain! Sign me up.

All you need is a container, rocks/pebbles, charcoal, soil, and plants. You layer them like the photo below. Not much to it, see? Now as far as upkeep goes, if your container is closed {has a lid} you do not have to water your plants very often. If your container is open, they say to spray your plants with water every few days or once a week.

I'm currently trying to find a container so that I can make mine. It will be on my kitchen table so I want an over sized and dramatic look. But I also don't want to break the bank. I have a feeling I will be doing some searching over the weekend.

Here are a few that have caught my eye {at varying price points}:

Have you jumped on the terrarium bandwagon yet? I'll update ya'll once I choose a container and get mine going! I'm not even sure what plants I want to use yet but I'm thinking a mix of cacti and succulents.
